Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module I have developed a whole lot of knowledge and understanding of print techniques and the special terminology, which should be used when speaking to printers. I feel I have applied them in the places needed well however I feel I should have documented more of my uses than I have within this module.

 2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have done a lot of rationale and research into primary and secondary subjects. This then led to the research of print methods that could be incorporated within my actual designs and future projects. Id say the biggest part of my production which developed in this project would be that I wouldn’t just decide upon a design and leave it as that I now understand the full importance of testing out multiple amounts of variations to allow for improvement with otherwise wouldn’t have been found

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I cant say that I can see any strengths obviously within my work this time I feel the lack of commitment to the module has shown through with my design work and thus leaving me having to scrape together any strength I can and perhaps say it would be my layout of the posters works really well and many people liked how easy it was to see and read when produced.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I feel my weakness in this module has been my commitment. From the start I felt quite rocky thinking that I wasn’t good enough to be on the course and I started to just come in and think id do the work at home and even though I did do some work it wasn’t to the standard or degree it should have been. After a crit with Lorenzo I had my spark back and knew it was time to kick-start it into gear before it was too late. I began coming in and committing myself to the uni course id get in for 9 and not leave till earliest 4 and my work has come a long way and I feel like im enjoying everything again. So to capitalise on a weakness I would have to say it was my commitment and graphic behaviour towards the module.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Commit myself

By committing myself I will benefit from taking everything I can from this course and what the tutors have to offer. Being surrounded by creative people will help my ambitions and creative thoughts.

Time Management
Time management wont go away im still not understanding it properly and even after a year I don’t understand it any clearer. However after staying at uni for longer and getting there earlier I definitely see the benefits of being able to time manage a lot of friends have progressed with it further than myself and there work is really showing up good because of it.

Blog More and better
I want to start blogging more and better posts. I really enjoy blogging I just leave it like an idiot and it builds up and seems like too much to do so my content suffers. When my blog starts looking healthier so will my work and thus everyone is happy.

• Research Deeper
My research is becoming thinner and im rushing ahead trying to get on with the designing only to find out that as soon as I try to finalise ideas there are big problem holes with the idea. Having more in depth and quality research can stop this. This would mean I’d understand my target market and audience much better.

• Try Harder
Im going to try a lot harder with uni from now on the second half of this module where I committed showed that I do still like graphic design and that I really like working with design and everything about it. I am exited for the new projects and my time at uni.

OUPD201 - Study Task 2 - Response

What is Industrial experience?

To gain insight into industry practice through working with clients outside of university
Studio placements can vary from a few days to a few months and could possibly lead to potential employment

What can you learn from industrial experience?

  • Gain further knowledge in all aspects of design
  • Create contacts, meet new people and collaborate with others
  • Industry standard practices
  • How a studio works and how they approach the work they take on
  • Your own work ethic

What form/format could industrial experience take?
  • Studio visits/placements
  • Freelance work
  • Visiting professionals
  • Feedback from those in industry
  • Working with live clients (freelance)

What areas of industry are you interested in?

I would say i am most interested in the idea side of the design process. I love thinking up quirky ideas and innovative work arounds. However if i have to choose digital or print i think i would go with print as i love designing and then seeing a final printed 'i can hold it' outcome.

  • Logo design
  • Packaging
  • Infographic

What are your concerns about industrial experience?

Money is a big factor when i think about industrial experience. I would love to tai cup any offers i could get to work places however being unpaid and a student makes both saving money and using money quite difficult.

Stepping into the real world. Even though uni is a big step into the real world, if i mess up on some spelling i get a telling off and to reprint... i don't think i paying customer would be as forgiving.

Summer Brief " What is Good"

I have been given a while to decide what it is that i would actually like to do with this.. i didnt want to think about it all that much and just maybe begin to make a list of things that i think are better than others and prehaps it would help me to break down to things id class as being "good"... im still underway with this and i will be posting it onto my design practice blog asap... but in the meantime i watched a recent lecture with Sefan Sagmeister discussing the 7 rules of happiness. Happiness is good...
7 Rules for making more happiness .

OUGD104 - What is a line - Evaluation

Module Code: OUGD104
Module Title: Visual Language

Name: Lewis Francis
Blog Address: http://www.l-francis1013.blogspot.com

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Time management
Working independently
Illustrator skills

I feel that all the above have been developed, perhaps not reaching a greater level of professional standard with them but defiantly developed upon. I feel i applied them all pretty well just at the wrong times and sometimes too late on in the designs.

2) What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I tried to use primary and secondary research through this brief but as i only travelled to Sheffield and Leeds this time I couldn't include all the research the work deserved. But I feel that if i had more time and used it more wisely I could have achieved a much more. As for informing my design it was very relevant for timing and distance that the research was there.

3) What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I feel the designs are looking strong with nice colours and a good layout I will try keep this up with future projects allowing me to keep a nice standard throughout.

4) What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

I feel that the lack of a working enviroment made me abit lazy and with t he weather being so nice iw a easily distracted by friends and family.I should work on time management to let me reach a certain goal at a certain time to allow more things to be achieved throughout the day without comprimising others.

5) Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  1. Time Management
  2. Try to achieve more bulk of work
  3. dig deeper into research ad let myself become engrossed witht he work
  4. show more of a passion for the designs
  5. keep blog updated
Looking at the above I feel this is something which once addressed it will be so much better for myself and working on briefs as its becoming more common for me to lose track of time and realise i dont have enough of it left to fully finish a brief to its full potential. The deeper I go into research the healthier and more real my final outcomes will feel. The last one is about the blog and i just wish i loved it as much as i do design work but its something i am working on I will try to keep updating everyday to show more of an understanding and more of a love for it.

6) How would you grade yourself on the following areas

Attendance - 3
Punctuality - 5
Motivation - 3
Commitment - 3
Quantity of work produced - 2
Quality of work produced - 3
Contribution to the group - 2

Conclussion

To conclude this project i have explored new formats such as flick books and have found that i am not very good at things like this as my ideas are too ambitious and thus meant it didn't work. Looking back i wish i kept my idea simple from the start along with being more 'into' the ideas i was having from the start.

Through this module i feel like i went off the idea of graphic design and put alot of doubt in my own work and then thought it wasn't worth doing so wouldn't save or carry on with ideas with the hope of starting again the next day.

I wish i could start this project again as i feel i would pursue a whole new idea and stay clear away from things like flick books but i have learnt that sometimes forgotten medias are perhaps forgotten for a reason.

I have shamed myself with this module and feel like it has been quite a waste which is an eye opener as from this point on i am going to dedicate a lot more time to my blogging and design work. I finished my weekend work job so i have more spare time to work and will mean i can focus more on tasks given.

End of Module Self Evaluation - OUGD 102

Module Code: OUGD102
Module Title: Design Process

Name: Lewis Francis
Blog Address: http://www.l-francis1013.blogspot.com

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
In this project i approached it knowing nothing about bookbinding or flickbooks. I have learnt how to create a flickbook from a video and achieve a steady smooth playback in a printed form. I dont think i explored it to its fullest and i believe i should have used it to a much better standard to help me achieve a dead certain 100 number for the flickbooks and pages.

2) What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

The research i took throughout his project was quite in-depth as it was a personal hobby and favorite subject i went and searched for more opinions than just my own and also looked into different aspects of dates and times of games which i would usually ignore.
I wish i could go back and perhaps look at peoples opinions on all the big decisions of my project making sure i was still following a line which would speak to my audience of fans.

3) What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I would have liked to say i created something which i could benefit from in the future but the only thing i can think of is that i have learnt not to try using flick books for ways to show long videos as it really doesn't work as well as it should for anything over 3 - 4 seconds.

4) What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

I feel my entire project has been a weakness as i haven't managed to finish it to a god standard at all. Time management was a huge issue as i haven't felt motivated to push myself with it at all. I cant blame the time period as its been the longest project to date nothing but personal laziness and lack of involvement. I have identified what distracts me and will make sure it doesn't happen again as i am more than capable of producing much better work than what i have.

5) Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  1. More in depth research both primary and secondary.
  2. Time management and own work time
  3. know when something isn't working and work around it
  4. if something gets boring MAKE IT INTERESTING
  5. remember why i love graphic design and show it in my work
by amending the above i believe i will create and produce much nicer and more up to date work which i will be more proud of.

6) How would you grade yourself on the following areas

Attendance - 3
Punctuality - 4
Motivation - 2
Commitment - 2
Quantity of work produced - 1
Quality of work produced - 1
Contribution to the group - 3
