Proposed Position Statement
Write 10 short but informative statements that identify your distinctive ‘positioning’ as a Graphic Designer. Your statements should consider your ambitions, skills and areas of creative interest in relation to the market, your clients, competition and possible collaborators and should be based on the information that you have collected in response to the set tasks.
You will need to compare a list of your skills and services against customer/client needs to those of your competitors, this should help you determine how your company is unique.

Enterprise; Study Task 4
Who else is out there - how good are they?
Based on the principles that have been introduced in lecture 4 of the Enterprise module and your responses to the previous tasks, evaluate the Strengths and Weaknesses of three practitioners or design agencies as objectively as you can. What opportunities for your own practice have revealed themselves to you as a result of this analysis and evaluation? Do not use subjective language or make unfounded comments about other people’s businesses. It is essential that you make references to SWOT and evaluate its usefulness as an analysis or evaluation tool.
In responding to this task you will need to consider the following questions:

Enterprise; Task 3
How will I promote myself?
Based on the principles that have been introduced so far in the Enterprise module and your findings in previous tasks, evaluate the most suitable marketing methodologies for your own practice and the most effective methods to reach your potential customers.
It is essential that you make references to some of the methodologies in the ‘Marketing Communication Mix’ and evaluate the ‘Place’ that will give you the greatest competitive advantage and be convenient for your clients / customers. This is an exercise in applying that theory – it is not appropriate to write about the theory itself. Demonstrate your understanding of it by actually using it.
In responding to his task you should consider the following questions:
Response
In the future i want to work in my own studio, working on projects for a range of businesses. Self identity and promotion will be key when wanting these potential clients to find me. I will have an online presence such as my online portfolio regularly updated blogs along with mailshots and promotional material. This would all be distributed through creative networks to help gain a backup of designers who could potentially help or give criticism back to what they think.
Networking is very important but very easy to get wrong, just because i have 2000 followers on twitter doesn't mean i will have 2000 people there ready to help or support me when I'm in need of advise. Networking is hugely effective when done correctly.
Online presences are everywhere nowadays and making yourself stand out from the crowd isn't as easy as being the guy who has a website just for his work. I feel its all moving back to print and the way to actually get someones attention is to be there in person with some freshly awesome printed promotional material and get in there hard leaving a mark and a strong visual presence.

Where are my potential clients/employers located?
My potential clients i feel would be quite small business and then work on recommendations and work brought towards me for the first part of my working life so that i could build an impressive portfolio then try speak out the larger business where the recommendations would be to other large companies and then i would have a well paying client base who have trust and communication with myself. I don't really mind where i end up being located id personally like to live and work in either America or Australia.

Clients i feel can be situated anywhere in the world with technology such as Skype and other communicational softwares a solid line to the client could be maintained easily no matter where they are. the benefit if eel of having clients in the same area or country as myself would of corse be the meeting up at some point and discussing ideas aswel as the referrals being probably quite close to the last client.

What media do my potential clients/employers use?
Media which clients will use can vary being able to accommodate for almost anything would be ideal however knowing limits is just as important. Most of my clients i feel would use media such as print and design for screen. Businesses all have print within them from annual reports to the corporate business cards. This being said i feel potential clients will be moving onto more digital presences with a lot of documentation being only on screen with the increase in tablets there is much higher demand for digital design.

What do you need to communicate and how does it match what your clients/employer need?
I will beed to communicate my passion and understanding of the subject and show a sense of professionalism with everything i show. By coming showing this side of myself the client will know they will receive good quality work.

What skills / interests you have and how they relate to the needs of your client group?
The skills i have within the way i work id say is how i put a lot of attention to every detail no matter on its importance. I would say my skills would best suit that of corporate branding due to my keen interest on meanings and stories behind subtle design techniques. I think my main skills defiantly rest in the software part of design, i understand being able to use the programs is only a helping part of the design process but being able to put together rock ups and visuals really helps sell your skills.
What skills are needed and what skills do you want to develop?
Logos and identities are the first thing someone will probably notice within a business or group and thus it is very important to pay high attention to layout and composition within any design when doing this. Making sure I keep a theme running is also a big part of the understanding of design as everything should keep the identity within everything created.
I think i need to develop my writing skills more as i feel i can speak about my ideas and usually mock them up to a high standard yet failing to put my ideas down in text stops others who don't have me there to explain everything lost.
What are your professional/creative aims and how do they relate to the needs of the client group?
When i finish university I want to go into my own studio with a few friends and try to establish a working company. This will take a lot of planning and leadership skills which i feel a client will defiantly look for within a designer someone who can take control and get a job done.

Evaluation
1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Throughout this module I have developed a whole lot of knowledge and understanding of print techniques and the special terminology, which should be used when speaking to printers. I feel I have applied them in the places needed well however I feel I should have documented more of my uses than I have within this module.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
I have done a lot of rationale and research into primary and secondary subjects. This then led to the research of print methods that could be incorporated within my actual designs and future projects. Id say the biggest part of my production which developed in this project would be that I wouldn’t just decide upon a design and leave it as that I now understand the full importance of testing out multiple amounts of variations to allow for improvement with otherwise wouldn’t have been found
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I cant say that I can see any strengths obviously within my work this time I feel the lack of commitment to the module has shown through with my design work and thus leaving me having to scrape together any strength I can and perhaps say it would be my layout of the posters works really well and many people liked how easy it was to see and read when produced.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
I feel my weakness in this module has been my commitment. From the start I felt quite rocky thinking that I wasn’t good enough to be on the course and I started to just come in and think id do the work at home and even though I did do some work it wasn’t to the standard or degree it should have been. After a crit with Lorenzo I had my spark back and knew it was time to kick-start it into gear before it was too late. I began coming in and committing myself to the uni course id get in for 9 and not leave till earliest 4 and my work has come a long way and I feel like im enjoying everything again. So to capitalise on a weakness I would have to say it was my commitment and graphic behaviour towards the module.
5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
• Commit myself
By committing myself I will benefit from taking everything I can from this
course and what the tutors have to offer. Being surrounded by creative
people will help my ambitions and creative thoughts.
• Time Management
Time management wont go away im still not understanding it properly and even after a year I don’t understand it any clearer. However after staying at uni for longer and getting there earlier I definitely see the benefits of being able to time manage a lot of friends have progressed with it further than myself and there work is really showing up good because of it.
• Blog More and better
I want to start blogging more and better posts. I really enjoy blogging I just leave it like an idiot and it builds up and seems like too much to do so my content suffers. When my blog starts looking healthier so will my work and thus everyone is happy.
• Research Deeper
My research is becoming thinner and im rushing ahead trying to get on with the designing only to find out that as soon as I try to finalise ideas there are big problem holes with the idea. Having more in depth and quality research can stop this. This would mean I’d understand my target market and audience much better.
• Try Harder
Im going to try a lot harder with uni from now on the second half of this module where I committed showed that I do still like graphic design and that I really like working with design and everything about it. I am exited for the new projects and my time at uni.

OUPD201 - Study Task 2 - Response
What is Industrial experience?
To gain insight into industry practice through working with clients outside of university
Studio placements can vary from a few days to a few months and could possibly lead to potential employment
What can you learn from industrial experience?
What form/format could industrial experience take?
What areas of industry are you interested in?
I would say i am most interested in the idea side of the design process. I love thinking up quirky ideas and innovative work arounds. However if i have to choose digital or print i think i would go with print as i love designing and then seeing a final printed 'i can hold it' outcome.
What are your concerns about industrial experience?
Money is a big factor when i think about industrial experience. I would love to tai cup any offers i could get to work places however being unpaid and a student makes both saving money and using money quite difficult.
Stepping into the real world. Even though uni is a big step into the real world, if i mess up on some spelling i get a telling off and to reprint... i don't think i paying customer would be as forgiving.
